Symptoms
Influenza usually starts suddenly and may include the following symptoms:
• Fever (over 100 degrees F)
• Headache
• Tiredness (can be extreme)
• Cough
• Sore throat
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Body aches
• Diarrhea and vomiting (more common among children than adults)
Students, faculty and staff with the above symptoms are strongly advised to visit a Health Care Provider or the Student Health Center, not go to class or work, and to stay home or in their residence hall (or otherwise directed) to minimize the spread of illness to others. You should remain home until fever-free for 24 hours.
Faculty and Staff should contact Human Resources if they or family members are ill with influenza-like illness or are diagnosed with the flu.
Healthy Practices to Help Prevent Illness
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective. They are available in the residence halls and other public places on campus.
• Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
• If you get sick, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others.
