Course Descriptions

ED 521 Theoretical Foundations of Educational Technology (3 credits)
Through the study of pathfinders and innovators, students examine the underpinnings of the Age of Information Technology. Theorists are highlighted as students chart the rapid advances of technology and its impact on society and education, and envision a future in which technology will influence teaching and learning.  Case studies will be used to discuss Ethics, Equity, Etiquette, Legality, Privacy, Safety, and Health. An online Student Portfolio, connected to a central EdMedia Reference Library, will be begun in this class.

ED 523 Underwriting the Media with Research and Pedagogy (3 credits)
Through critique of multiple media delivery systems (instructional videos, instructional television programming, documentaries, film and web resources), students develop an understanding of messages, both overt and subliminal.  Students will utilize the motivational and instructional qualities of various media, as well as critically evaluate and prepare materials and activities for use by teachers and students. The roles of gender and culture will be highlighted. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio.

ED 529 Educational and Documentary Video Production (3 credits)
Students will review traditional documentary works: ethnographic, cinema veri-te, autobiographical, activist videos, etc. and create a documentary for teaching purposes. Audience and topic will be determined by small groups who will storyboard, shoot, edit and document the media production. Students will hone their listening, writing and research skills and will better understand the implicit and explicit choices, ethical and social, in creating documentaries. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio.

ED 530 Applications and Content Integration I (3 credits)
Students develop a leadership role in selecting and evaluating media-based, content-rich resources for the P-12 classroom, specifically for the English and Social Studies content areas, while developing peer-mentoring and professional development skills and honing their story-telling skills, a major component of all media.  Instructional videos, instructional television programming, documentaries, film and web resources will be used. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 5 hours of field experience required.

ED 533 Applications and Content Integration II (3 credits)
Students develop a leadership role in selecting and evaluating media-based, content-rich resources for the P-12 classroom, specifically for the Mathematics and Science content areas, while developing peer-mentoring and professional development skills.  Instructional videos, instructional television programming, documentaries, film and web resources will be used. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 5 hours of field experience required.

ED 560 Resource Management (3 credits)
Students develop strategies to solve basic and more advanced computer-related problems. Technical writing skills and security issues will be emphasized as students develop project management, professional development and leadership skills. Students will understand the various configurations of networks, wired and wireless, shared, centralized and decentralized, and use server technologies including those for video streaming. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 10 hours of field experience required.

ED 561 Methods and Strategies (3 credits)
Grounded in cognitive psychology and learning theories, such as differentiated instruction and multiple intelligences, students will assess how various forms of media and technology, including assistive technologies can address the needs and learning styles across the spectrum of learners and curriculum. Focus groups, surveys, testing and other evaluative tools will be addressed. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 20 hours of field experience required.

ED 570 Instructional Design I (3 credits)
Students concentrate on advanced publishing on the web for educational purposes as well as evaluate the use of learning management systems and social networks. A variety of learning objects will be created and assessed.  Examples include pdf’s, wikis, blogs, rss feeds, e-zines and newsletters as emphasis will be on the Language Arts and Social Studies curricula. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 5 hours of field experience required.

ED 571 Instructional Design II (3 credits)
Building on the skills developed in Educational Documentary Production and Instructional Design I, students will develop expertise in graphics and animation for educational purposes.  Examples include the creation of games, virtual communities, use of clickers, mobile devices and podcasting tools.  Emphasis will be on the Math and Science curricula. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio. 5 hours of field experience required.

ED 572 Team Project I (3 credits)
Students emulate a production team in which roles are assigned and managed to produce a 30 minute documentary with supporting materials.  Students from content areas, computer science and communications may also be included. This course will utilize the skills acquired in previous courses including production, technical and script-writing, web-mastering, the creation of teacher/student guides and other materials appropriate to content, medium and learner. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio.

ED 615 Research in Educational Technology (3 credits)
This seminar is designed to assist students with the acquisition of the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes required to approach current research in educational technology.  Through student exercises, critiques, class discussions and reactions to class readings, students develop the skills necessary to read, interpret and critique professional literature and to begin to design their own scholarly research in the Educational Media field. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio.

ED 670 Team Project II (3 credits)
Independent study is required based on an internship. Evaluative benchmarks will be established based on the particular field assignment and in coordination with the Dominican College professor and the site supervisor. Typical placements will include school settings, as interns to computer coordinators or professional developers; broadcast television stations; documentary production studios; and educational website production companies. All assignments will be stored online in the Central EdMedia Reference Library and attached to Student Portfolio.
